Is renting space in a government warehouse better than building my own godown for grain?

I store about 200 quintals of grain each year. Should I build a small godown or keep using a CWC or state warehouse on rent?

For a modest 200 quintals, renting space in a Central or State Warehousing Corporation godown is usually smarter than building your own. Rented scientific warehouses give pest control, weighing and a negotiable warehouse receipt you can pledge to a bank for a pledge loan, so you can hold grain for a better price without selling in distress. Building a pucca godown is a large fixed cost that only pays off at higher, regular volumes or if you also store for others. Compare the annual rent plus losses you avoid against the cost and interest of a new godown. Ask your warehouse about WDRA registered electronic receipts and the pledge loan rate before deciding.

I built a small godown years ago and honestly for 200 quintals it was not worth the money tied up. The pest control and security at the state warehouse are better than what I manage at home. Unless you store much more or store for others, rent is smarter.

I keep my grain in the state warehouse and took a pledge loan against the receipt. That way I do not sell cheap right after harvest and still have cash. Building my own godown for that volume made no sense.

One angle in favour of your own godown only if you grow a lot or store for others. I store close to a thousand quintals across my own crop and a few neighbours, and at that volume my godown pays and gives me full control over timing. For just 200 quintals it would sit half empty and the money is better left in the warehouse rent route. Decide by your real annual volume, not a good year.

Compare the full picture: warehouse rent plus a pledge loan against the receipt versus your own godown cost and the interest on that money. When I worked it out, renting plus the loan let me hold for a better price without locking up capital in a building. Check this season's rent and loan rate before deciding.
