Lodging in wheat is mostly caused by excess nitrogen, too high a seed rate, dense lush growth and heavy irrigation near maturity, especially in tall varieties. To prevent it, use the recommended nitrogen dose in proper splits rather than overdosing, keep the seed rate correct, choose lodging-resistant semi-dwarf varieties, ensure adequate potassium, and avoid late heavy irrigation when ears are heavy and wind is likely. Balanced nutrition makes stems stronger. A plant growth regulator is sometimes used in very lush crops but only on KVK advice. Confirm your fertiliser plan with your Soil Health Card and KVK.
I cut back on the extra urea and split the nitrogen properly. My wheat stayed standing this year even in strong wind.
The late heavy irrigation was my mistake. I flooded the field when the ears were heavy and a wind came the same night and laid it flat. Now I keep the late waterings light and skip them if a windy spell is forecast. Heavy ears plus wet soil plus wind is the recipe for lodging.
Watch your seed rate too, not just the nitrogen, because my over-dense crop grew thin weak stems that fell easily even without extra urea. Once I kept the seed rate correct so the plants had room to grow sturdy, along with balanced fertiliser, the crop stood up much better in wind.
Choosing a sturdy semi-dwarf variety helped me more than anything, the tall older types just cannot carry a heavy crop. Combined with balanced fertiliser and not piling on nitrogen, the shorter strong-strawed variety stands up well even in a good high-yielding year.
