I want to set up a biofloc or RAS unit for fish. Does PMMSY support these and how do I apply?

PMMSY, the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, supports a wide range of fisheries activities including intensive systems like biofloc tanks and recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), along with ponds, hatcheries and post harvest infrastructure. Subsidy is generally given as a share of the approved unit cost, with a higher share for women, SC and ST applicants, but the exact percentage and ceiling depend on the component and the latest guidelines, so confirm current figures with your district fisheries office. Apply through your state fisheries department, which handles project approval, beneficiary selection and release of the subsidy, usually with a detailed project report and your own or bank financed share. Because biofloc and RAS need careful daily management, get proper training before investing, since technical failure, not lack of subsidy, is the common reason these units fail.

Get proper hands on training before you put money into biofloc. I visited a working unit and did a short course first, and I am glad I did, because the daily management is unforgiving and several people near me lost their stock from getting the basics wrong, subsidy or not.

The subsidy usually comes after you set up the unit and it is inspected, not as cash upfront, and a good detailed project report through the district fisheries office is where it stands or falls. Do not assume a fixed percentage, confirm the current figures with them because the guidelines change.

RAS and biofloc depend completely on power and water management, so plan a backup for power cuts before anything else. A long outage can kill everything in a dense tank. I treated the technical side as the real investment and the subsidy as a bonus, which is the right way round.

Fix your market before you build a biofloc unit, not after. These systems push out a lot of fish and I have seen people set up the tanks under the scheme then struggle to sell at a price that covers the running cost. The fisheries office helped me with the project report, but the selling plan was on me.

Keep every bill and photograph the construction stages, the inspection for the subsidy wanted proof of the actual spend. My file moved faster because all the documents were ready. Confirm the current share and ceiling with the district office yourself rather than trusting numbers floating around on social media.
