Pangasius, sold as basa, is an air breathing catfish that tolerates crowded ponds and can be stocked at high density, giving heavy yields per acre, much more than ordinary carp culture, which is why it became popular in Andhra Pradesh. The trade off is that it needs a lot of formulated feed, so feed cost and the selling price at harvest decide whether you profit, and prices can swing sharply with market gluts. It also needs good water management and is sensitive to mass mortality if water quality crashes in dense stocking. Profitability varies a lot year to year with feed and fish prices, so plan conservatively, line up your market before harvest, and start at a manageable scale. Get stocking density and feeding advice from your state fisheries department.

Basa gives big yields but the feed bill is huge and the price at sale time is unpredictable. In a glut year margins are thin. Fix your buyer and watch the market before you harvest.

At high stocking density the water can go bad fast and a crash can kill a lot of fish at once, which I have seen happen to neighbours. I keep my density a bit lower than the maximum and manage the water carefully, sleeping better for it. Do not chase the absolute highest yield if you cannot manage the water.
