Sugarcane uses a lot of water under flood irrigation, and drip can cut water use substantially while often raising yield through fertigation. The common approach is paired row planting where two cane rows are kept close together so one drip lateral in the middle serves both rows, which reduces pipe cost; the paired rows are then spaced wider apart for movement. Lateral and emitter spacing must match your soil and row geometry, so get a design rather than copying numbers. Subsurface drip, with laterals buried in the root zone, lasts across ratoons and reduces evaporation but needs good filtration and care against root intrusion and clogging. Add fertigation to spread nutrients through the season. Get the layout and schedule from a micro irrigation agency or your KVK and check current drip subsidy.

We shifted cane to paired row drip and fertigation. Water use dropped a lot and the ratoon came up more even. Filter cleaning discipline is a must.

Buried subsurface drip lasted me across two ratoons without relaying pipes, which saved a lot of labour. But you must use the recommended root barrier treatment and keep up the flushing, otherwise roots grow into the emitters. The filtration has to be spot on since you cannot see the buried line clogging.

Do apply for the drip subsidy, it brought the cost of doing my cane down a lot. The micro irrigation agency made the layout and helped with the subsidy paperwork. Fertigating the cane through the season instead of broadcasting also stretched my fertiliser further and the growth was more even.
