My paddy field has a hard pan and water drains too fast, what should I do?

Sub surface hard pan in paddy, percolation losses, puddling and compaction, breaking pan.

If puddled paddy water disappears very fast, you may have lost the natural plough pan or have a porous sub soil, so water percolates instead of staying. Good puddling creates a shallow compact layer that holds water, so make sure puddling is done at the right moisture with enough passes to seal the layer, but do not over puddle to the point of harming soil structure. Adding organic matter and clay or tank silt can help porous soils hold water. The opposite problem, a deep hard pan that blocks roots and drainage in upland fields, is broken with a chisel plough or sub soiler when the soil is dry. Identify which problem you actually have by digging a pit first. Confirm the approach with your KVK before deep tillage.

Dig a pit and look first, like the team advises. I assumed I had a blocking hard pan and almost hired a sub soiler, but the pit showed my problem was the opposite, a porous layer with no proper plough pan holding water. Better puddling at the right moisture fixed it without any deep tillage.

Puddle when the soil has the right wetness, not too dry and not soupy, and give it enough passes to seal a tight layer at the bottom. When I rushed the puddling my water leaked away within a day. A proper sealed pan held the standing water much longer and saved a lot of pumping.

Mixing in tank silt and FYM helped my porous paddy field hold water better over a couple of seasons. The extra clay and organic matter plugged some of the leakiness. It is slow, but along with careful puddling the field now keeps water far better than it used to.
