My groundnut leaves are yellow between the veins while veins stay green, is it iron or zinc?

Yellowing between the veins while the veins stay green (interveinal chlorosis) on the younger leaves usually points to iron deficiency, which is very common in groundnut on calcareous, high pH soils of Saurashtra. Zinc deficiency also shows interveinal yellowing but tends to come with smaller leaves and shortened internodes. Confirm with a soil test, but for iron chlorosis the practical fix is a foliar spray of ferrous sulphate around 0.5 to 1 percent (5 to 10 g per litre) with a little citric acid, repeated 2 to 3 times at weekly intervals, since soil iron gets locked in high pH soil. For zinc, use zinc sulphate foliar or soil. Long term, add organic matter and avoid over irrigation. Adjust doses to your Soil Health Card and KVK; do not over apply.

This happens to me almost every year on the limey patch. The ferrous sulphate spray works but only if you add the citric acid, otherwise the iron does not stay available in our high pH conditions. I do two sprays a week apart and the new growth comes out green.

One big trigger I noticed is over watering. When I flooded the groundnut early the yellowing got much worse because the wet limey soil locks iron even more. Cutting back to lighter, more frequent watering reduced the problem a lot for me.

If the leaves are not just yellow but also small and the plant looks bunched with short joints, get zinc checked too. Mine looked like iron but a soil test showed both iron and zinc were low. A zinc sulphate soil dose plus the iron foliar sorted out a problem I had been spraying iron at for two years.

Mine looked exactly like iron on the limey Junagadh patch and the ferrous sulphate spray with citric acid greened the new flush within two sprays. Without the citric acid the iron just did not hold in our high pH water. Two sprays a week apart did it.

Do not keep spraying iron blindly year after year without a soil test. I sprayed iron for two seasons before a test showed my real problem was patchy and tied to over watering, not just low iron. Cutting back the early flooding helped as much as the spray.
