My mill recovery is low so my FRP payment is less. How can I improve sugar recovery percentage from my cane?

Higher sugar recovery means a better FRP payment, since FRP is linked to a 10.25 percent recovery with a premium for each 0.1 percent above it. To raise recovery, first choose a high sucrose, early or mid maturing variety suited to your zone, since variety sets the ceiling. Harvest at full maturity, not too early or too late, and crush within 24 hours of cutting because cut cane loses sugar fast in heat. Stop or reduce irrigation about 3 to 4 weeks before harvest so the crop ripens and sugar concentrates, and avoid excess late nitrogen which keeps cane green and watery. Control red rot, wilt, and borer that lower juice quality. Detrash and avoid harvesting lodged, dried, or immature cane. Confirm the best maturity window for your variety with VSI or your mill cane department.

In Mandya I learned to stop watering a few weeks before cutting and to send cane to the mill the same day it is harvested. My recovery slip improved and so did my payment. Wet, late watered cane always gave me low recovery.

The harvest window is something I watch closely now. Cutting an early variety too young when it has not ripened, or letting it stand far too long, both dropped my recovery. The mill cane department here tells you the maturity window for each variety, so ask for it rather than cutting whenever labour is free.

Late nitrogen was my hidden mistake. I used to top dress urea quite late thinking it would add weight, but it kept the cane green and watery and the recovery suffered. Finishing the nitrogen on time and letting the crop ripen properly gave me heavier sugar even if the cane looked a touch less lush.

A caution against burning cane before harvest to make cutting easier, burnt cane must be crushed very quickly or its quality and recovery fall fast, and it can attract a penalty at some mills. Fresh, unburnt, detrashed cane delivered the same day consistently graded better for me. Check your mill's rules on burnt cane.
