Ribbed smoked sheet is made by collecting fresh latex, straining it, diluting and coagulating it with a recommended dilute acid in trays, then rolling the coagulum into sheets, ribbing it, and drying or smoking it. Mould and dark patches usually come from using stale or contaminated latex, dirty trays and water, wrong acid quantity, and slow or damp drying. Keep everything clean, coagulate fresh latex the same day, use the correct acid dilution, and dry sheets quickly in a well ventilated smoke house or shade so they do not stay damp. Even thin sheets dry better than thick ones. For the exact acid dilution and grading standards, follow the Rubber Board guidelines.

My dark patchy sheets cleared up once I started washing the trays and using clean water every time. Dirty trays were the cause. Cleanliness at every step decides the colour of the sheet.

Roll the sheets thin, the thick ones I made stayed damp inside and went mouldy. Thin even sheets dry through properly in the shade. The mould was always in the thicker lots for me.

Get the acid dilution right, too much or too little both gave me poor sheets. I follow the Rubber Board measure now and coagulate the latex the same day it is tapped. Stale latex was spoiling my colour earlier.

Strain the latex well before coagulating, the bits of bark and dirt that slip in left specks and dark marks in my sheets. A clean strainer and clean collection cups make a clearer sheet. Small things at collection show up later in the finished sheet.
