A rubber tree is usually ready for first tapping when the trunk reaches the standard girth, generally around six to seven years after planting depending on clone, soil and care. Tapping starts low on the panel and moves down slowly using a controlled cut depth and angle, since cutting too deep into the wood or too fast damages the bark renewal and shortens the tree's productive life. Protect the panel from tapping panel dryness and bark rot by good technique, rain guards in the monsoon, and panel treatment as advised. Rest the panel as recommended and follow the tapping system suited to your clone. Confirm girth standards, clone and panel care with the Rubber Board or your KVK.

Do not rush the first tapping just because trees look big, go by girth. And a shallow steady cut is the secret, the man who taps too deep ruins the bark and you pay for it for years.

Rain guards saved my tapping through the monsoon, otherwise the rain washes the latex and the panel stays wet and rots. Fitting them before the rains let me keep tapping with less bark trouble.

A good experienced tapper is worth paying for. A careless one nicked the wood and gave me panel dryness on a few trees that never recovered well. The bark has to renew, so the cut control really matters over the years.

Rest the panel as the Rubber Board advises instead of tapping the tree flat out every day, the rested trees held up better over the years for me. Pushing too hard for more latex now shortened the productive life of the over tapped ones. Steady and rested beats greedy.

Treat the panel as advised against the bark rot, especially going into the wet months, the untreated panels on my older trees got the rot. A clean cut, panel treatment and rain guards together kept my bark renewing well. The Rubber Board field officer showed me the right cut angle.
