Black pepper is a climber that needs living standards, and commonly used ones are silver oak, erythrina (dadap), jackfruit, and in coffee estates the shade trees themselves. A good standard has rough bark for the vine to grip, grows fast, tolerates pruning to control shade, and does not compete too hard with the pepper roots. Silver oak is popular in Kodagu because it also gives timber and light shade for coffee. Space and prune standards so the pepper gets filtered light, not deep shade which cuts yield, and not full harsh sun. Keep the standard healthy since a dying support drops the vine. Check the best standard and spacing for your estate with your KVK or the Spices Board.

In our estate silver oak does double duty, it shades the coffee and carries the pepper, and the timber is a bonus later. The rough bark holds the vine well. That is why most of us in Kodagu use it.

Erythrina (dadap) grows fast and you can prune it to let light in, which suited my younger pepper plants. The point is to keep pruning the standard so the vine gets filtered light and not deep shade.
