Panniyur 1 is a widely grown high yielding black pepper variety, and several other Panniyur and institute released varieties suit different conditions, so pick one recommended for your area. Plant rooted cuttings, usually two per standard, in June and July at the onset of the monsoon. Dig pits of about 50 cm cube and space standards roughly 2 to 3 m apart in both directions, with Panniyur 1 often at about 3 m by 3 m. Use live standards such as silver oak, erythrina or jack so the vine has support and partial shade. Apply organic manure plus a balanced NPK dose per vine in split applications during the monsoon. Train the runner shoots up the standard. Confirm the best variety for your area with the Spices Board.

Silver oak makes a good live standard, fast growing and gives the right shade. I planted two cuttings per tree and tied the runners up regularly. Train them young or they sprawl.

Plant with the first monsoon rains so the cuttings establish before dry weather. I lost some that I planted late. June planting in Wayanad worked best for me.

Erythrina is a good standard too because it gives nitrogen and the pepper likes it, but it can blow down in strong wind when young. I mix erythrina and silver oak so I am not relying on one. Panniyur 1 needs decent light, do not put it under very heavy shade.

Take cuttings only from healthy high yielding mother vines free of disease. Cheap bundles of cuttings from the market can carry quick wilt or virus into your new garden. The whole garden depends on what you plant, so do not save money on poor planting material.
