Why does cumin fail when grown in the same field every year?

Growing cumin year after year on the same field builds up Fusarium wilt and other soil borne fungi that survive in the soil for years, so yields fall and wilt rises exactly as your neighbours say. Rotate cumin with non host crops and give the field a break of two to three years from cumin to let the disease load drop. Use healthy treated seed, avoid waterlogging, and do not pile fresh undecomposed manure that can worsen rot. Solarising the soil in summer and using tolerant varieties also helps. Get your soil and a tolerant variety checked through your KVK, and confirm rotation crops suited to your Jodhpur conditions.

I rotated my cumin plot with another crop for two seasons and the wilt dropped clearly when I came back to jeera. The neighbours are right, the field needs a break from cumin.

Summer solarisation helped on my badly affected plot, I kept the field exposed and worked in the hot months. Combined with clean treated seed the next cumin crop was healthier. The fungus lives in the soil so you have to attack it there.

Do not put fresh raw manure just before sowing, that made my wilt worse one year. Use well rotted manure and let the field drain. Ask the KVK for a tolerant variety, that also took some pressure off.

Ask your KVK for a wilt tolerant variety, it did not stop the disease fully but my loss was much less than the old seed I was saving. Combined with giving the field a break it kept the crop standing. The tolerant types are worth the seed cost.
