Guava naturally flowers in more than one season, but the rainy-season crop is often watery, pest-prone, and low-priced, so crop regulation pushes the plant to give a better quality winter crop. This is done by withholding irrigation for a period to give the plant a rest, then resuming water along with light pruning and manuring so it flushes and flowers for the chosen crop. Removing the unwanted flush and shaping the canopy concentrates the plant's energy into the marketable crop. The exact rest period and pruning depend on your region and variety, so do not copy a schedule blindly. Confirm the water-withholding duration and pruning timing for the winter crop with your local KVK or horticulture department.

We deliberately drop the rainy crop because in our Pune area the monsoon fruit is full of fruit fly and sells for nothing. Withholding water for the rest and then plucking off the early flush forces the plant into the winter crop, which is sweeter and gets a far better price. Sacrificing the cheap crop to get the good one was the right call.

The rest period on our light soil near Junnar is shorter than what heavy-soil growers use, so we watch the leaves and the soil rather than the calendar. After resuming water we add well-rotted manure and a balanced feed at the same time so the flush is strong. A weak revival gives scattered flowering instead of one clean crop.

Along with water and pruning we do a light bending or tipping of shoots to encourage more flowering wood for the winter crop, which our KVK suggested for our variety. Do not prune too hard at once or you push only leafy growth and delay the crop. Get the timing right and the whole block flowers together, which makes harvest and marketing much easier.

We mark the trees we are resting so labour does not accidentally water them during the stress period, which ruined the rest one year. A clear plan and a tag per row keeps the whole block on the same schedule. The block flowers together then, which makes the harvest and the marketing far simpler.
