A simple trellis lifts cucurbit vines and fruit off the ground, which prevents fruit rot, gives straighter cleaner fruit, improves air flow against downy and powdery mildew, and makes spraying and picking easier. A low cost option is a pandal (overhead horizontal net) supported on bamboo or concrete posts with wires, or a vertical net wall between posts for gourds and cucumber. Train the vines up with twine and let them spread on the overhead net so fruit hangs down freely. Trellised cucurbits usually yield more marketable fruit than ground grown vines. Confirm spacing and the best trellis type for your crop and budget with your KVK or block horticulture officer.

In Patna after I put up a bamboo pandal for my lauki the fruit stopped rotting on the wet ground and came out long and straight. The mandi clearly pays better for clean straight fruit.

A tip: a vertical net wall between posts is cheaper than a full pandal and works well for cucumber and gourds. Train the vines up early with twine and the picking gets much easier.
