How to control downy mildew in bottle gourd and sponge gourd in the rainy season?

Downy mildew shows as angular yellow patches on the upper leaf surface bounded by the veins, with a grey to purplish mould on the underside in humid weather, and it spreads fast in the wet monsoon. Improve air movement by trellising the vines and wider spacing, avoid evening overhead watering, and remove badly infected lower leaves. Resistant or tolerant cucurbit varieties reduce risk where available. Protectant and systemic fungicides are used preventively at first symptoms and rotated by mode of action, but you must follow the label dose, the pre harvest interval and local KVK recommendation, especially since gourds are picked often. Do not rely on one fungicide repeatedly or resistance will develop.

In my Hooghly field downy mildew comes with the first heavy monsoon spell every year. Trellising the lauki and giving wide spacing for air flow slowed it more than I expected.

One caution: do not spray the same fungicide again and again. I did that once and it stopped working, after rotating modes of action as per the label and KVK advice it held better.

A tip from me: I remove the badly infected lower leaves early and avoid evening overhead watering. Drier foliage overnight slowed the downy mildew a lot in the monsoon.
