How to control onion (pyaaz) basal rot and damping off in the nursery and field?

My onion seedlings rot at the base and collapse in the nursery, and some field plants rot at the bulb base. How do I manage this?

Damping off in the onion nursery and basal rot in the field are soil and water borne problems made worse by excess moisture and poor drainage. In the nursery, use raised beds with good drainage, do not over water, use treated seed, and avoid very dense sowing, since crowded, wet nurseries collapse from damping off. A recommended seed and soil treatment and soil solarisation of the nursery bed before sowing help. In the field, basal rot, often Fusarium, rots the base of the bulb and roots, so use clean seed, follow crop rotation away from onion and garlic, ensure good drainage, and avoid wounding the bulbs. Remove and destroy affected plants. There is no easy cure once bulbs are rotting, so prevention through drainage, rotation and clean seed is key. Ask your KVK for the right seed and soil treatments for your area.

Raised nursery beds with good drainage stopped most of my damping off. In flat beds the water stood after rain and the seedlings collapsed in patches. Raising the bed and not over watering, plus thinner sowing, kept them standing.

Sowing too thick was my mistake. The crowded seedlings stayed damp and airless and went down to damping off together. Spreading the seed thinner so air moves between the plants made a big difference, along with treated seed.

In the field, rotation helped my basal rot. Growing onion after onion in the same plot kept building the disease in the soil. Rotating away from onion and garlic for a season and making sure water did not stand around the bulbs reduced the base rot a lot.
