Oilseeds like groundnut have a high sulphur demand because sulphur is needed for oil and protein formation, so a deficiency shows as pale yellowing of younger leaves and poor pod and oil yield. Correct it by applying a sulphur source such as gypsum or a sulphur bearing fertiliser at sowing or early growth, and in groundnut gypsum at pegging also supplies calcium for pod filling. Do not assume the dose, since it depends on your soil test, so use your Soil Health Card to confirm how much sulphur your soil actually needs before applying. Balanced NPK along with sulphur gives the best response in oilseeds. For the exact sulphur rate and product for your soil, check your Soil Health Card and local KVK.

Gypsum did double duty for my groundnut, it supplied the sulphur the crop needed and the calcium at pegging for better pod filling. The leaves greened up and the pods filled better than the year I skipped it. It is a cheap input for an oilseed that demands sulphur.

The pale yellowing in oilseeds is easy to confuse with nitrogen shortage, so do not just throw more urea at it. In my case a soil test pointed to sulphur and correcting that fixed the colour and the yield. Get the Soil Health Card done before deciding, it saves you guessing and wasting money.
