Judge groundnut maturity by opening a sample of pods rather than by leaf colour alone, since digging too early gives unfilled pops and digging too late causes pods to sprout or detach in the soil. Mature pods show a dark, well marked inner shell and the kernels have developed their proper colour with the seed coat firm. A simple check is to pull a few plants from different spots and shell some pods to see how many have reached this stage. The crop is generally ready when a large share of pods are mature. Variety duration also guides timing, so know whether yours is a short, medium, or long duration type. For the maturity indicators specific to your variety, confirm with your local KVK.

I always pull a few plants from different corners of the field, not just one spot, because the edges and the centre can mature at different rates. Shelling a handful of pods and seeing how many have the dark inner shell tells me clearly if it is ready. Checking one plant can mislead you.

Knowing your variety duration helps you start checking at the right time. My short duration type was ready well before my neighbour's longer one, and if I had waited the same number of days the pods would have started detaching in the soil. So note whether your seed is short, medium or long duration.
