Most farmers take one to two good ratoons after the plant crop, and a well managed field can sometimes give a third, but yield and sugar recovery usually decline with each successive ratoon as gaps increase and disease builds up. The right number depends on how healthy and full the stubble stand is, not a fixed rule, so judge by the field. If you see red rot, wilt, heavy gaps, or grassy shoot, it is better to plough out and replant with healthy, treated setts rather than push another ratoon. Rotating with a different crop before replanting cane also helps break disease and restore soil. Decide based on your stand condition and check disease status with your sugar mill cane staff or local KVK.

In Kolhapur I usually take one ratoon and then change the field. Pushing too many ratoons just gave me thin canes and low weight. Fresh planting after a break pays better.

I judge it by the gaps and the health, not by a fixed count. If the first ratoon stand is still full and clean I keep a second one, but the moment I see grassy shoot or red rot I plough it out. Chasing one more ratoon from a sick field is a loss every time.
