Small millets like kodo, little, foxtail and barnyard have a hard husk that must be removed with a dehuller, and the lack of nearby dehulling has long been a barrier, so processing usually pays much more than selling raw grain. Small and medium millet dehullers and grading and destoning units are available from agricultural machinery makers, and many are set up by FPOs, SHGs and through schemes for millet processing rather than by one small farmer. Selling dehulled, cleaned and packed millet, or flour and ready mixes, fetches a far higher rate than raw grain. Group processing through an FPO or cluster makes the machine viable and opens better markets. Check support for millet processing units under your state and central millet mission and the food processing scheme, and tie up buyers before investing.

Our group bought a small dehuller with scheme help. Selling dehulled kodo and millet flour earns far more than raw grain to a trader.

In Karnataka our FPO also does custom dehulling for farmers from nearby villages for a fee, which helps cover the machine cost on top of our own grain. The extra job work made the unit pay for itself faster.

One caution: the dehuller needs the grain dried to the right moisture or the husking is poor and grain breaks. We learned to clean, destone and dry properly first, otherwise the recovery of whole grain drops and so does the price.

In Odisha our SHG started with a small foot-operated and then a small motorised dehuller before investing in a bigger unit, to first prove the local demand. Starting small and growing as orders came in kept the risk low for us.

One tip from Telangana: we tied up a steady buyer for dehulled foxtail millet before buying the machine, so the processed grain never piled up unsold. Lining up the market first mattered as much as the machine itself.
