How do I revive a paddy crop after early submergence from flood water?

After flood water recedes, the first step is to drain the field as fast as possible so the plants get air and light, then wash silt off the leaves with a light spray of water if it has settled on them. Rice can survive a few days of complete submergence, and submergence tolerant Sub1 varieties survive 10 to 14 days, so do not give up too early. Once water drains, wait a few days for new growth, then apply a light nitrogen top dressing to push recovery, and watch for pests and diseases that attack weakened plants. If the stand is badly thinned, gap fill from a nearby nursery or thicker patches. For flood prone land, grow Sub1 varieties next season and plan drainage in advance.

Draining quickly saved most of my field last flood. The Sub1 variety patch bounced back better than my old variety.

In Assam after the silt settled on my leaves I waited for the plants to stand up on their own before doing anything, then gave a light urea dose. Rushing fertiliser onto stressed, silt-coated plants harmed them the first time I tried.

One caution: after the water went down, brown plant hopper and blast hit my weak crop badly, so I scouted every few days. Catching the pests early on the recovering crop saved more than the fertiliser did.
