Paddy lodges when the stem is weak and the panicle is heavy, made worse by excess nitrogen, close planting, tall varieties, and wind or rain near maturity. To prevent it, avoid overdosing urea and split nitrogen so the crop is not too lush, keep balanced potash which strengthens stems, and use recommended spacing rather than very dense planting. Choose shorter, lodging-resistant varieties for windy or fertile fields, and drain the field as the crop nears maturity so the soil firms up. Once lodged at the milk or dough stage, drain water and harvest as soon as practical to reduce grain loss, sprouting and quality damage. Plan variety and nitrogen for next season to fix the root cause.

My tall variety flattened after a windy spell on heavy urea. Cutting nitrogen and adding potash helped the next crop stand.

In Andhra I switched to a shorter recommended variety on my most fertile plot where the tall one always fell. The short type held up through wind and rain and harvesting was much easier and cleaner.

One caution: draining the field about a week or ten days before harvest firmed my soil so the combine did not bog down and the standing crop stayed up. Keeping water till the end made both lodging and harvesting worse for me.

In Tamil Nadu I stopped broadcasting and went to proper spacing, because my dense crop had thin weak stems that fell easily. Giving each plant room made the stems sturdier and lodging dropped clearly.

One tip from West Bengal: I add the recommended potash and do not skip it, since the year I used only urea my stems were soft and lodged in the first storm. Balanced potash made a real difference to stem strength for me.

A caution from my Haryana fields: do not give a heavy late nitrogen dose chasing more grain, because it made the canopy lush and top-heavy and it lodged. Keeping the late dose modest kept the crop standing till harvest.
