What is SRI method of paddy and does it really raise yield?

SRI (System of Rice Intensification) uses very young seedlings of about 8 to 12 days, transplanted singly at wide spacing of around 25 by 25 cm, with the soil kept moist but not continuously flooded, and regular weeding with a cono or rotary weeder that also aerates the soil. The idea is stronger root growth and more tillers per plant, which can raise yield and cut seed rate to about 5 to 6 kg per acre while saving water. Many farmers report higher yield, but results depend on careful timing, good levelling and weed management, and it is labour intensive at transplanting. It suits assured water and attentive management more than large rough fields. Try it on a small plot first and judge for your conditions.

On my SRI trial plot single young seedlings tillered much more than my normal field. Weeding with the cono weeder is the hard part.

One caution: transplanting 10 day seedlings needs gentle hands or you damage the tiny roots. I trained my labour to lift seedlings with a little soil on a small plate and plant shallow, and survival improved a lot.
