For salt-affected coastal and inland soils there are released salt-tolerant rice varieties such as the CSR series from CSSRI Karnal and tolerant types recommended by state universities, plus traditional coastal landraces that survive brackish conditions in the Sundarbans. These tolerate moderate soil and water salinity better than normal high yielding varieties, though very high salinity still cuts yield. Along with variety, improve the land with good drainage, gypsum where soil is sodic, organic matter, and by flushing salts with available fresh water before transplanting. Some submergence and salinity tolerant types also handle tidal flooding. Get the exact recommended variety and seed from your state agriculture university or CSSRI, as suitability differs by salinity level.

Old local salt-hardy paddy still survives in our tidal plots when nothing else does. The CSR types from the block gave better yield though.

On my coastal Odisha plot the biggest help was bunding to keep tidal water out and flushing with the first monsoon rain before transplanting. Even a tolerant variety fails if salt water keeps entering, so the drainage and bund came first for me.

One caution: get the salinity of your specific plot checked, because what works for my neighbour did not work for my saltier patch near the creek. The block office tested my soil and water and only then suggested the right variety.

In Andhra near the Godavari mouth I raise a slightly older, sturdier seedling and transplant more hills per spot so a few survive the early salt shock. Giving the crop a stronger start helped my stand in the saline patches.
