Is broadcasting or line sowing better for wheat yield and weed control?

I usually broadcast wheat seed by hand. People say a seed drill gives more yield. Is it true.

Line sowing with a seed drill generally gives higher and more uniform wheat yield than broadcasting, because it places seed at proper depth and spacing for even germination, better tillering and easier weed control, while broadcasting wastes seed and gives uneven stands. Drilling also lets you place fertiliser near the seed and makes interculture and herbicide spraying more effective. The seed rate can often be a little lower with a drill than with broadcasting. If you do not own one, a seed drill is commonly available through custom hiring centres. Confirm settings and rate with your KVK.

I switched from broadcasting to a seed drill hired from the CHC and the crop stand was much more even, with less weed trouble and better yield.

The seed saving alone convinced me to stop broadcasting, with the drill I used noticeably less seed per acre than scattering by hand and still got a thicker, more even stand. Over a few acres the seed I saved across the season more than covered the cost of hiring the drill.

The fertiliser placement was the unexpected benefit for me. With the drill the basal fertiliser goes right next to the seed instead of being scattered on top, so the young plants got it better and the early growth was stronger. Broadcasting wasted some of my costly fertiliser on bare ground.

Even without owning a drill it is worth hiring one for a day from the custom hiring centre. I split the cost with a neighbour and we both sowed our wheat in lines. The lower seed use and the easier weeding paid back the hire charge in the same season.
