How do I manage wilt in chana when the same field wilts every year?

Gram📍 Sehore

My gram crop wilts in patches around flowering every season in the same field. Want a long term fix.

Repeated patch wilting around flowering usually points to fusarium wilt, a soil-borne disease that builds up when gram is grown on the same field too often. The main long-term fix is to grow wilt-resistant or tolerant chana varieties, rotate with non-host crops like cereals, and avoid early sowing in warm soil which favours the fungus. Treat seed with a recommended fungicide plus Trichoderma bio-agent, and improve drainage since waterlogging worsens it. Variety choice for your area is best confirmed with your KVK, and a soil test helps rule out other causes.

Switching to a resistant variety and rotating with wheat cut my wilt patches a lot. Trichoderma seed treatment also seemed to help.

Sowing date made a clear difference for me. When I sowed too early into warm soil the wilt was worse. Waiting until the soil cooled a bit in our area reduced the patches noticeably, on top of using a tolerant variety.

In my part of Sehore the wilt builds up where gram follows gram, so the surest long-term fix for me was bringing wheat into the rotation on that field for a year or two. The break in the host crop, along with a tolerant variety, knocked the wilt patches right down.

I started mixing well-rotted Trichoderma-enriched farmyard manure into the worst wilt patches over a couple of seasons along with the seed treatment. It is a slow build, not an overnight fix, but those patches gradually shrank. Building up the good fungus in the soil seems to crowd out the wilt over time.
