How do I store wheat at home to prevent weevil and stored-grain pest damage?

Every year some of my stored wheat gets eaten by sosri and weevils. Looking for safe storage methods.

The key is to store fully dry grain in clean, airtight containers and keep moisture low, since stored-grain pests like weevils and lesser grain borer multiply fast in damp, dusty grain. Clean the storage bin or metal drum, sun-dry the grain to safe moisture before filling, and use airtight metal bins or hermetic bags so insects suffocate. For larger stocks, recommended fumigation can be used but only by trained handlers following the label and safety precautions, never mixing chemicals loosely with grain you will eat soon. Neem leaves and proper drying help for small lots; confirm any fumigant use with your KVK.

I shifted to airtight metal bins after drying the grain properly and the weevil problem almost disappeared. Damp grain was my old mistake.

For my larger stock I keep it in a hermetic bag inside the bin, the airtight bag cuts the oxygen and the insects suffocate without any chemical, which suits grain we eat through the year. The KVK showed me how to seal it properly, the trick is to fill it dry and close it tight.

Cleaning the old bin before refilling makes a big difference, because the eggs and tiny insects hide in the cracks and corners from last year's stock. I scrub and sun the empty bin for a day before putting in fresh grain, otherwise the new lot gets infested from the leftovers.

Check the grain a few weeks after filling by opening the bin on a dry day and looking for any dust or webbing, because catching a small infestation early lets you re-dry and re-seal before it spreads. I learned to inspect rather than just fill and forget, and my losses dropped a lot.

For my household quantity I dry the wheat thoroughly on a hot day, let it cool, and put a few dried neem leaves in layers inside the steel drum. It is not a miracle but it keeps the sosri down for the family stock, and the airtight lid is the main thing that does the work.
