At an APMC mandi you bring produce, register a gate entry, get it weighed and sold by auction or to a licensed trader through a commission agent, then receive payment. Steps: bring your lot to the regulated market yard and record a gate entry with commodity, quantity and vehicle details. The produce is unloaded, often handled through a licensed commission agent (arhtiya), and sold by open auction or negotiation to licensed traders. After the sale, the lot is weighed and a sale slip is made showing rate, weight and deductions. Market fee and commission charges are deducted as per state rules. Payment is then made to you. Insist on a written sale slip and proper weighment, and keep your produce graded and clean to attract better bids.

Always get the written sale slip showing rate and weight. First time I trusted verbal numbers and the final payment did not match. Now I check the slip and weighment myself.

Through the commission agent the auction was quick, but watch the deductions. Ask upfront what market fee and commission will be cut so there are no surprises in payment.

The market fee and commission percentages differ from state to state and even by commodity, so do not assume what someone in another state told you. Ask the mandi office for the current rates so you can work out your net before selling.

Go early in the day if you can. Bids were better when buyers were fresh and many lots had not yet flooded the yard. By late afternoon the rate for my coriander had slipped.
