To control brown plant hopper (BPH) in paddy, first drain the field to expose the base of plants, then spray a recommended insecticide directed at the lower stem where hoppers sit. Effective options include pymetrozine 50 WG, dinotefuran, or buprofezin, applied when you see 5 to 10 hoppers per hill. Avoid blanket spraying of older chemicals like imidacloprid alone, as BPH has developed resistance in some areas, and rotate insecticide groups. Keep wider spacing, avoid excess nitrogen, alternate wetting and drying, and protect natural enemies like spiders and mirid bugs. Watch for early hopperburn circular drying patches and act quickly before it spreads.

Scout early in the morning by parting the plants and looking near the water line. Once hopperburn patches show, it is already late. Early detection is everything with BPH.

Do not spray synthetic pyrethroids or repeat the same insecticide, it kills the spiders and makes BPH worse, this is called resurgence. Rotate the chemistry and follow the label dose and PHI. Confirm the current recommended molecule with your KVK each season.

Wider spacing and cutting urea reduced BPH a lot in my fields in West Godavari. Thick, lush, over fertilised crop is what they love.
