Sticky honeydew and ants on my jowar, and curled twisted top leaves

Sticky honeydew with ants, curling and twisting of the top leaves and small soft insects on the underside is the typical sign of aphids on sorghum, which cluster on the lower leaf surface and suck sap, and the sugary honeydew they leave attracts ants and can grow a black sooty mould. Before deciding on a spray, look for natural enemies such as ladybird beetles, their larvae and lacewings, because they often bring aphid numbers down on their own if you do not disturb them, and the ants are a sign rather than the cause. Send a photo to your KVK or agri officer if you want help judging the numbers. Avoid excess nitrogen which makes the crop more attractive to aphids. If the colonies are very heavy and spreading on a young crop and control is justified, your officer can suggest a recommended active, but follow the label dose, the pre-harvest interval and the local KVK recommendation and rotate the mode of action so the helpful insects are protected. Where the natural enemies are active, it is usually best to let them work.
