Tillers of my rice turning yellow and stunted in patches, plants pull out easily

Yellow, stunted patches with few tillers and plants that pull out easily with rotten or discoloured roots is a pattern that can come from several different causes, so this needs careful checking before treating. The main possibilities are a root or sheath rot complex, a nutrient problem such as iron, zinc or sulphur disorder, salinity or poor drainage with a hard pan, root feeding pests or nematodes, or sometimes a virus spread by hoppers. To narrow it down, note whether the patches follow low lying wet spots or the field layout, dig up a few plants to look closely at the roots, and check whether hoppers were active earlier; please take photos of the plants and roots and a sample to your KVK or agri officer, and a soil test will help rule out salinity and nutrient causes. Because the cause decides the cure, avoid spraying randomly. If it turns out to be a nutrient deficiency the officer will advise the right correction, if it is waterlogging then improving drainage helps, and if a root disease or pest is confirmed they will suggest the suitable management. Confirm the diagnosis with your local KVK before applying anything, and plan crop rotation and good drainage for the longer term.
