Pinkish to white plant hoppers and sooty black on my paddy, hopper burn starting

Small whitish hoppers feeding higher up the plant, drying patches and a sooty black coating on lower leaves point to white backed plant hopper, a close relative of brown plant hopper that tends to sit a bit higher on the plant and also causes hopper burn in patches. Part the plants and tap them to see the hoppers fall, and send a photo to your KVK or agri officer to confirm which hopper it is. The management is much like for BPH: drain the field for a few days to break the humid base conditions, avoid excess nitrogen, keep alleys for airflow, and protect natural enemies by not spraying broad spectrum chemicals that trigger a worse comeback. If numbers are very high and patches are spreading, recommended actives include pymetrozine or dinotefuran directed at the lower canopy, but follow the label dose, the pre-harvest interval and your local KVK recommendation and rotate modes of action. Act on the spreading patches quickly because hopper burn enlarges fast in warm humid weather.
