Greenish grey oval or boat shaped patches with irregular brown borders on the leaf sheath near the water line, spreading upward in a thick canopy, are the typical signs of sheath blight. It thrives in dense, lush crops with high humidity and heavy nitrogen, and the fungus survives in the soil and on stubble. Please confirm with a photo to your KVK or agri officer. The most effective cultural steps are to avoid very close spacing and excess urea, keep alleys for air movement, and drain off standing water in the affected area to reduce humidity at the base. If the disease is climbing toward the upper leaves and the crop is still some way from harvest, recommended fungicides include actives such as hexaconazole or validamycin, but follow the label dose, the pre-harvest interval and your local KVK recommendation and rotate the mode of action. Catching it while it is still low on the plant protects the flag leaf, which matters most for grain filling.
