Seed shattering is a common loss in niger because the heads mature unevenly and the small seed sheds easily if harvest is delayed. Harvest at the right stage when the lower heads turn brown but before all heads dry and shed, cutting in the cooler morning hours when shattering is less, and handle the plants gently. Stack and dry the cut plants on a clean sheet so the seed that falls is collected. For pests, niger is relatively hardy but watch for caterpillars and bugs on the heads and treat only if they build up, following the label. Avoid overripe harvesting. Confirm the right harvest stage and any pest recommendations for your area with your KVK.

Cutting in the early morning and laying the plants on a sheet to dry saved most of my falling seed. If you wait till everything is bone dry the seed sheds in the field and you lose it.
