French beans are sensitive to both frost and high heat, so the main plains sowing is in the cool months of October to November and again in spring, while in the hills they are grown through the warm season. Choose between bush types, which are quick, easy and need no support, and pole types, which yield over a longer period but need staking. For bush beans, sow in lines about 30 to 45 cm apart with plants close in the row. Pole beans need wider spacing and a trellis. Treat seed with Rhizobium for better nodulation. The crop starts picking in roughly two months. Confirm the recommended variety and exact window for your area with your KVK.

In Solan we grow them through the warm season and supply the plains. Pole beans pick for longer so I get a longer selling window, but they need the trellis and more labour.

Bush French beans are easier for a first timer, no staking and a quick crop. Just watch the frost dates, one bad frost can finish them.
