Masur (lentil) is a rabi pulse usually sown from late October through November after rice. In the Bihar rice belt many farmers sow it as utera or relay, broadcasting seed into the standing rice crop just before harvest so it uses the residual soil moisture, or sowing soon after harvest into moist soil. Earlier sowing within the window gives better yield, as very late sowing runs into terminal heat at pod fill. Treat seed with Rhizobium and PSB before sowing for better nodulation on a field that just grew rice. Keep one light irrigation in reserve if the soil dries at flowering or pod fill. Confirm the recommended variety and exact window with your KVK.

Utera masur works well in our low land where the soil holds moisture after paddy. I broadcast a few days before cutting the rice. On drier plots I sow after harvest with one irrigation.

Do not sow too late. My late masur got caught by the March heat and the pods did not fill well. Rhizobium treatment is cheap and the nodulation is clearly better.
