I want to start commercial beekeeping for honey as a business, not a hobby. How many colonies do I need to make it worthwhile and what is the setup cost range?
For a commercial honey business you usually need a meaningful number of colonies, not five or ten boxes; many full-time beekeepers run from several dozen up to a few hundred colonies, and migrate them to follow flowering crops. Treat costs as ranges. Each colony needs a box with frames, a bee colony with a laying queen, and shared equipment (honey extractor, smoker, protective gear, feeding and storage). The big recurring effort is migration (moving boxes to mustard, eucalyptus, litchi, sunflower and so on) and feeding bees in the lean season. Start smaller to learn colony management before scaling. Get proper training first from the Central Bee Research and Training Institute, a State Agriculture University or KVK, and confirm current colony and equipment costs and any subsidy locally.
In Punjab the money is in migration. I move my boxes to mustard and then to other flowering crops. Standing in one place all year, the bees starve in the lean months and you feed sugar, which eats profit.
Do not buy a big lot of boxes before you can handle bees. I started with a small number, lost some colonies to mistakes, and learned. Scale up once you can split colonies yourself.
Add up the hidden costs before you commit. The boxes and colonies are just the start. Sugar feeding in the lean season, transport for migration, a good extractor, and replacing absconded or dead colonies all add up. My first year cash flow was tight because of these.
Training is the cheapest investment. I did a short beekeeping course before buying boxes and it saved me from beginner mistakes that kill colonies. Honestly that one decision protected my money more than anything.
