Clonal eucalyptus is a popular short rotation industrial tree, mainly for paper pulp, plywood, packing wood and poles. Improved clones grow faster and more uniformly than old seedling eucalyptus, with first harvest usually around 4 to 6 years, and you can take a coppice crop from the cut stumps afterwards, giving a second rotation without replanting. Income per acre is a wide range depending on clone, spacing, survival, girth and the mill rate at sale, and pulpwood rates fluctuate, so plan conservatively. Eucalyptus grows on marginal land but does use water, so be mindful where groundwater is scarce. Use clones recommended for your region from a reliable source, since clone choice strongly affects growth. Confirm pulp or plywood mill demand near you and the transit rules before planting a large block.

Clonal eucalyptus did better for me than the old seedling type, more even and faster. The coppice second crop saved replanting cost. But pick the right clone for your soil.

Watch the water angle in dry areas. It grows on poor land but heavy rows of eucalyptus can pull down a low water table. Plan placement sensibly.
