Red sanders is controlled because it is rare, slow growing, endemic to a small region, and its red heartwood has high illegal demand abroad, which led to heavy smuggling. Because of this it sits under wildlife protection and international trade controls. The practical effect for a farmer is that felling, possession, transport and especially export need permissions, and unauthorised movement can attract serious legal action. The rules also keep changing, and there have at times been special relaxations for trees grown on private land, but you must confirm the current position yourself. Do not assume the wood is freely saleable just because the trees are on your patta land. Get the felling permission and transit pass position in writing from your State Forest Department before harvest, and be extremely cautious of anyone offering to buy or move red sanders without papers.
