Production, feed conversion and income expectations for vannamei.

With good management vannamei can give a strong yield per acre per crop and often two crops a year, but the income swings widely with survival, count size at harvest, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and the market price, so treat any fixed figure with caution. A good FCR is often near 1.2 to 1.5, meaning that much feed per kilo of shrimp, and a poorer FCR quickly eats your profit. Income depends heavily on the export driven farm gate price, which rises and falls with global demand and can drop sharply in a bad year. In good years it is very profitable, in bad years farmers can lose money, especially with disease. Do not plan on the best case. Get realistic yield, FCR and price ranges from local farmers and your Fisheries department, and keep a buffer for a bad crop.
Two good crops a year can be very profitable, but the price per kilo is set by export demand, not by us. One year a price crash wiped out what the previous year earned. Keep reserves.
