Is cashew (kaju) farming actually profitable in India or just for big estates?

Cashew can be profitable but it is a long gestation perennial, so plan for 5 to 7 years before steady income. Raw cashew nut prices have swung a lot in recent years, so income ranges widely. A mature acre giving 4 to 8 quintals of raw nut, sold at the going raw nut rate, can give a reasonable net once the orchard stabilises, and value addition through processing your own kernels raises returns sharply but needs investment and labour. The big risks are the long wait to bearing, tea mosquito bug damage at flowering, and price volatility for raw nuts. It suits you if you have patience, can intercrop in early years for some cash, and do not need quick returns. Work out your own numbers with local raw nut rates and verify with your KVK before committing 3 acres.

I do small scale processing myself and sell roasted kaju directly. That is where the real money is, raw nut alone the rate is up and down. But processing needs labour and care.

In Ratnagiri many of us intercrop in the early years so the land is not idle while the kaju grows. Once trees are big you cannot intercrop much. The tea mosquito bug at flowering is the real headache, lose that and you lose the crop.
