I want to grow peach. Which areas suit it, how much chilling does it need, and can low-chill peach varieties be grown in the warmer lower hills or plains?
Peach is a temperate stone fruit grown commercially in Himachal, Uttarakhand, Kashmir and the hills, but it is one of the more flexible temperate fruits because there is a wide range of chilling requirements among varieties. High-chill varieties suit the cold higher hills, while low-chill peach varieties (such as the Florida and Sharbati type low-chill selections) genuinely do well in the lower hills and even subtropical plains of north India, which is why peach is grown in parts of Punjab, Haryana and the UP terai. So yes, low-chill peach in the plains is realistic, unlike cherry. Match the variety's chilling need to your location, which is the single most important decision: a high-chill variety in a warm area will flower poorly, and a low-chill variety in a very cold area may bloom too early into frost. Peach flowers early so frost is a risk in cold sites, and it bears young (often from year 2 to 3). Choose the right chilling-class variety for your altitude with your KVK.
Low-chill peach grows well in our Punjab area and fruits early in summer when little else is around, so it sells nicely. Variety choice for our warm winter was the key.
In the higher hills I grow a high-chill variety. A friend lower down grows a low-chill one. Same fruit, different variety for the climate, that is the trick.
