Jojoba is a desert shrub grown for the liquid wax (called jojoba oil) in its seeds, which is valued by the cosmetics and industrial sectors, and it suits hot, arid, sandy, well drained land of areas like western Rajasthan and Gujarat, tolerating drought, heat and poor soils where little else grows. It needs good drainage, full sun and protection from frost, especially when young, and does not like waterlogging or heavy clay. However, you must be honest about the risks: jojoba is a niche, long gestation crop in India, it is dioecious so you need both male and female plants in the right ratio for seed, yields build up slowly over years, and the market for the oil is specialised and often depends on tie ups with cosmetic or processing buyers. There have been past schemes that disappointed growers due to poor planting material and weak markets. So treat it as a long term, high risk crop, start small, secure a buyer first, and confirm everything with the arid research station or your KVK before investing.

Jojoba survives our harsh desert conditions where ordinary crops die, that part is true. But the market is the problem, you cannot just grow seed and assume someone will buy it at a good rate. Get a buyer lined up first.

A lot of people here were sold the jojoba dream years ago and were let down by bad plants and no buyers. If you try it, start with a small area and good quality female plants, not a big block on faith.

The shrub really does laugh at drought, ours came through brutal summers untouched. The farming part is easy, it is the selling that decides whether you make money. No buyer, no business, simple as that.
