Custard apple is attractive because it is low input, drought hardy and grows on poor land, so even modest yields can be profitable relative to the low cost, especially with improved big fruited varieties. Grafted improved orchards start bearing within a few years and yield rises with age, but yield per acre and income vary widely with variety, rainfall, irrigation and management, so treat any figure as a range and verify with growers and your KVK. The fresh fruit is highly perishable and must be sold quickly in local and city markets, where good large fruit fetches a premium, but a glut or transport delay causes losses. A major advantage now is strong demand for sitaphal pulp, which is frozen and used in ice cream, milkshakes and desserts, so selling to pulp processors or doing pulping yourself can give steadier, often better returns than fresh sale alone. Line up fresh buyers or a pulp unit before scaling, and treat income as a range to confirm locally.

The pulp market changed sitaphal for us. Fresh fruit spoils fast and the rate swings wildly, but selling pulp to a processor gives a more dependable income. The crop costs us very little to grow on our dry land.

Large fruit from improved varieties sells well in the city market in season. Just remember it is very perishable, you cannot hold it like an apple, so plan quick sale or pulping.

Our group does small scale pulping and freezing now. It needs a bit of investment in a pulper and cold storage, but it turns a perishable glut crop into something we can sell over months at a steadier rate. Worth looking into if a few farmers join hands.
