What spacing and planting care does mangosteen need for a small orchard?

Mangosteen trees are medium to large and slow, so they are planted at a moderate to wide spacing, often somewhere around the 8 to 10 metre range each way depending on soil and management, giving a modest number of trees per acre; confirm the exact figure with your horticulture department for your conditions. Dig good sized pits filled with well rotted organic matter and topsoil, ensure excellent drainage because the tree hates waterlogging, and plant grafted or healthy seedling stock at the start of the rainy season. The most important early care is shade and steady moisture, so provide temporary shade or use a nurse crop, mulch the basin, and never let young plants dry out or sit in water. Protect from wind. Because the gaps between trees stay open for years while the trees are small, use that space for short term intercrops to earn early income. Get final spacing and a fertiliser schedule from your KVK.

We kept ours at wide spacing and used the gaps for banana and pineapple in the early years. By the time the mangosteen needed the space the short crops were done. Drainage and shade for the young plants are the two things I would never skip.
