How soon does star fruit (carambola) bear and what care does it need?

Grafted star fruit usually starts bearing within about 2 to 3 years and, in warm climates, can fruit in more than one flush a year. Care is fairly simple, it needs regular irrigation (it does not like drought or waterlogging), protection from frost and strong winds, light pruning to shape the tree and improve airflow, and balanced nutrition based on soil testing. The main ongoing task is pest management, especially fruit fly, through sanitation, traps and, on small plantings, bagging the fruit.
