In the Agra and western UP plains, Kufri Bahar, Kufri Pukhraj and Kufri Lauvkar are popular table varieties, and Kufri Chipsona-1 and Chipsona-3 are grown for chips and processing where there is a buyer tie up. Kufri Pukhraj is early, vigorous and high yielding (around 70 to 90 days) which suits the short UP winter, while Kufri Bahar is a good general purpose, good keeping variety. For processing, Chipsona types have high dry matter and low sugars and store well, but only grow them with a contract since the table market does not pay extra. Pick certified seed, plant in October to November, and match the variety to whether you are selling fresh, holding in cold store, or supplying a processor.

Pukhraj is my main crop near Agra; it bulks fast and I get it out before the heat. For cold store holding I keep some Kufri Bahar as it keeps better.

If you have a chips company tie up, Chipsona is good money, but do not grow it on a guess. I planted Chipsona once without a contract and the regular mandi paid me no extra for it, so I made less than if I had grown table potato.

Whatever variety, the certified seed point is the real one. My neighbour and I planted the same Pukhraj name, but his certified seed gave clearly higher yield than my saved seed from last year. The variety alone is not enough.

Kufri Lauvkar is worth a look if you want a very early crop to catch the first market. It comes out fast, though it does not store as long as Bahar, so I sell it fresh rather than putting it in cold store.

Match the variety to your selling plan. I split my land, an early variety for fresh sale at first market and a good keeper for cold store holding. Putting all of it in one early variety meant I had nothing left to hold for the better later rates.

Caution on timing in our belt: plant when it actually turns cool, not too early. An early planting in lingering heat one year gave me a weak crop. Potato needs the cool weather to bulk properly here in Agra.
