Every harvest the whole village competes for the same workers and I either pay too much or my crop waits. How do farmers arrange enough labour for the peak days?
Plan labour the way you plan inputs, weeks before harvest, not on the morning you need it. A few practical things that work: book your regular gang in advance with a small advance (baki/peshgi) so they commit to your dates; tie up with a labour contractor (thekedar) who brings migrant teams during your peak; and stagger your harvest by sowing two or three maturity windows so you are not trying to cut everything in three days. Many farmers also reduce dependence on hand harvest for cereals by booking a combine harvester slot early. Talk to your neighbours and share a single migrant gang across adjoining fields, it lowers per acre cost for everyone. For paid help, the local mandi, custom hiring centre and now WhatsApp groups of nearby farmers are the fastest ways to locate teams. Confirm the daily or per acre rate, food and travel arrangement clearly before they start.
