How do I find genuine export buyers for my onions?

Onion📍 Nashik

I grow onions in Nashik and want to sell to export buyers instead of only the local mandi. How do I find real overseas buyers and not get cheated.

Start by getting your IEC (Import Export Code) from DGFT and registering with APEDA, since onions are an APEDA scheduled product. To find buyers, the safer routes are: APEDA buyer-seller meets and virtual trade fairs, Indian export promotion events, and reaching out through established merchant exporters who already have overseas contracts. You can also list on verified B2B platforms but treat unsolicited buyer enquiries with caution. Never accept a deal where the buyer asks you to first pay a registration, sample-clearance, or agent fee to receive a large order, that is the most common scam pattern. Always verify the buyer through their country's company registry, ask for trade references, and use a safe payment method like a confirmed Letter of Credit. For your first few shipments, working with a reputed merchant exporter or your FPO reduces risk a lot. Confirm current registration steps and fees on the official APEDA and DGFT portals.

I am also from Nashik. For my first export I did not deal direct, I supplied to a Mumbai based merchant exporter who had Gulf buyers. Margin was less but payment was sure. Once you learn the quality and packing they want, then think of direct.

One man messaged me on WhatsApp saying he is a buyer from Dubai and wanted 20 containers, then asked for 50000 rupees as some clearance deposit. Total fraud. Real buyers never ask the farmer to pay money first.

APEDA buyer seller meets are genuinely useful. We attended one and got two leads that turned into actual orders. You need APEDA registration to participate.
